Maria Riivari serves as the inhouse legal counsel at Avara, the parent company behind Aave Labs, developers of the DeFi protocol Aave, the Aave-native overcollateralized stablecoin GHO, the SocialFi network Lens, and the mobile Ethereum wallet Family. Based in London, Maria is passionate about finding legal solutions that support innovative products. She believes in integrating legal considerations early in the development process, creating a framework that helps product teams build with confidence.

In this talk, Maria will share her experiences as an in-house counsel navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of emerging technologies. Attendees will gain practical strategies for tackling complex legal issues in a tech-driven world.

Technical talk: Tackling Financial Crime with AI: Obligations, Techniques, and Challenges with Valeria Cortez (Monzo Bank)

Valeria Cortez Vaca Diez is a Lead Data Scientist at Monzo Bank, specialising in using ML and data analytics to tackle financial crime. She focuses on building scalable data pipelines and deploying models to detect fraud and ensure regulatory compliance. With expertise in data engineering and machine learning, Valeria has developed advanced solutions for transaction monitoring and anti-money laundering, driving impactful, data-driven decisions in financial services.

Valeria will explain evolving landscape of financial crime, highlighting the legal and regulatory obligations financial institutions must meet. We’ll explore cutting-edge AI techniques used to detect and prevent illicit activities, such as fraud and money laundering. Finally, we’ll discuss the common challenges faced when implementing AI solutions, from data quality issues to navigating regulatory compliance.
